Social Prescribing

Social prescribing is a way for healthcare professional to connect people with activities and groups to improve health and wellbeing.

Paddle boarding has a wealth of physical, social, and mental benefits; that we love to share with everyone!

Check out the video below where BBC Morning Live came to see us delivering a social prescription session.

Paddle boarding falls into the category of “Green / Blue Prescribing” , which is just a way of saying getting people outdoors to reap the benefits of being in nature. Green being what we think of when talking about spaces like parks, woods and mountains and blue being what we think of when we talk about lakes, canals, rivers and seas.

How to get involved with Social Prescribing

Nottingham's intention is to make green prescriptions (using exercise in the fresh air to improve people's health and wellbeing) and nature connectedness (taking the time to notice and enjoy nature) a part of everyday life. However, some people will need help to know what nature-based opportunities there are near to them and might need additional support and encouragement to use them.

There are usually two routes to get involved in social prescribing

  • Self - referral: You have made your own decision to improve your mental health by getting involved in an activity

  • GP/ Link worker: You have visited your GP and they have recommended a social prescription to help support your mental health

Our Current Involvement

In 2022 we launched The WOW Project. WOW is supported by GreenSpace, the Green Social Prescribing Programme for Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. GreenSpace is part of a growing green social prescribing network across the country helping people enjoy the benefits of nature connectedness for their mental and physical wellbeing.

The project aims to support people to get out on the water for a sustained period of time to help create habit and lifestyle changes that support peoples health long-term.

Head over to our WOW Project page to find out more and for joining us out on the water.

Previous Projects

Canal and River Trust Wellbeing Waterways

We were excited to be partnered with the Canal and River Trust, delivering their Wellbeing Waterways Programme in Leicester, Nottingham and Newark. The video below shows perfectly why we love the water, why we want to encourage and support local communities into the great outdoors and out onto the waterways. The personal testimonials show how one hour a week paddling can make a huge positive impact in many parts of day to day life
